Prof. Tronci is a biomaterials scientist with research expertise at the interface of biopolymers, healthcare and sustainability. He was promoted to Professor in 2023 and currently serves as the Deputy Director of CCTMIH. His research is pursuing the translation of new collagen hydrogels for human use and the development of new material-based concepts for oral care, bone regeneration and infection control. He is academic founder of HYFACOL Ltd, a new University of Leeds spin out company developing Leeds collagen manufacturing technology for wound dressings and dentistry applications.

Prof. Tronci joined the University of Leeds in 2011 as a Research Fellow within the WELMEC Centre of Excellence in Medical Engineering, where he developed a new collagen manufacturing technology that was later patented in the US and Europe. In 2013, he was appointed in the School of Design as a Senior Research Fellow of the CCTMIH, where he developed protein-friendly fibre spinning approaches for integrated medical devices. Following a three-month research visit at the University of Michigan (US) via a Wellcome Trust-ISSF award, he started (2016) a Lectureship in Healthcare Materials (CCTMIH, School of Design) with a joint appointment with Leeds School of Dentistry (since 2018).
