Prof. Russell is a textile engineer and was appointed to a personal Chair in Textile Materials and Technology in 2006. He is Director of the Nonwovens Research Group and Director of the Centre for Technical Textiles at the University of Leeds. Core research interests are primarily concerned with the manufacture and structure-property relationships of engineered textile materials and nonwoven assemblies. Current multi-disciplinary, collaborative research includes water-dispersible hygiene fabrics for improved patient care, tailored biomimetic scaffold production and therapeutic fibre development. He is a member of the peer review college of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and an Editorial Board member of The Journal of The Textile Institute and the Textile Research Journal. In 2005, he founded theĀ Nonwovens Innovation and Research Institute Ltd.(NIRI), a University of Leeds spinout specialising in the industrial development of advanced nonwoven materials and processes.
